Broken Puppy Blog

On Wednesday, August 26, I found this puppy (approx. eight months old) in the road with two broken legs. She is a wonderful animal and we are raising funds to cover the costs of surgery and rehab. Keep checking back for updates on her progress.

My wife Rebecca and I are musicians living in North Carolina. We have an awesome rescue dog named Domino (pictured above). Rebecca is a volunteer at the local humane society. From the Broken Puppy and all of us, thank you for your kindness!

UPDATE: Due to the tremendous response to Hope's struggles, we now feel that her medical expenses will be covered. We will not know the exact tally of costs associated with her rehabilitation until late November, but all estimates indicate that her needs have been met. Our gratitude for all who gave to her cause cannot be adequately expressed.

On Thursday afternoon, Hope went to the surgeon for her six-week check-up.  Even though Hope has been walking without a limp and not showing any signs of pain for the last few weeks, we were concerned that she would have some underlying problems.  Though we’ve tried to keep her contained, she IS a puppy, and she has been playing with Domino, walking up and down stairs, and running around the house.

After viewing the x-rays and testing strength and flexibility, her report was even better than expected!  The summary reads as follows:

On 10-12-09, “Hope (Broken Puppy) MacLeod” presented 6 weeks after surgical repair of bilateral distal femoral fractures and a left distal tibial fracture (all Salter fractures).  The following is a summary of her visit:

Diagnosis: healed fractures with excellent pelvic limb function!

Recommendations: Hope is doing terrific!  Radiographs today show that all her fractures are healed and her implants are stable.  You can increase her leash walks over the next two weeks, and allow gradual increases in unrestricted activity and play with Domino!  She can be totally ‘normal’ in her activity within two weeks!  Please call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Rebecca and I are thrilled and relieved to know, without a doubt, that the Broken Puppy is no longer broken.
